Default Dr. Who?

I realize I risk offending a great many science fiction fans and perhaps more than a fair share of you across the pond, but someone needs to explain to me the attraction of Dr. Who.

I've tried watching both the original and new series and I find myself somewhat annoyed by the whole thing. Perhaps I am missing something?

Yes, you are quite correct Morrolan. It sucks. Since it's creation in 1963 by Sydney Newman & Donald Wilson it has been nothing more than rubbish & dustbins dressed up with sink plungers .

Ok admittedly the BBC don't have the money that Hollywood has. That is no excuse however. The British invented Sci Fi as a genre & Dr Who is just piss poor.

You are not missing anything Mr Morrolan. I think, why doesn't Mr Who (who says he is a doctor anyway, he has never been on ER) go back in time & take a load of money with him, give it to Auntie Beeb & say "Now make a decent series with loads of cool spaceships & thinly veiled communists as alien enemies & have loads of CGI space battles!"

My guess is that it's too cerebral for many out there.

I feel a little better then. I get hung up on the crappy sets and odder than hell plot-lines and was afraid I was missing something. Mind you I'm one who gives shows more than one shot, but I'm not sure I can give it anymore.

Are you saying Jerry Springer isn't cerebral? LOL.

Seriously, I worry about that from time to time. That American cinema and TV is having to dumb down it's products to the greater masses can understand. I'm a man who likes a laugh, but I can only take so much fart and sex humor in one program.

LOL! I don’t think Hollywood has ever been in danger of producing thought provoking or particularly intelligent material.

This debate really intrigues me - I love American TV and its indie Films and can’t understand why we Brits fail so miserably with stuff like Hex, Torchwood and Primeval. You look at similar American shows; Buffy, Firefly, Carnivale etc – they’re flawless; funny, poignant, intelligent, romantic and work on a number of levels. We Brits just don’t seem to make good TV, I think a lot of it is due to the rampant nepotism in the UK media industries (idiots run the show) and part is perhaps due to the humble budgets – there just isn’t the money behind British film or TV.

As for Doctor Who – I’m not a fan, I think they are pretty poor, but it is aimed at kids. I loved the Tom Baker as a youngster, but just can’t take to the newer ones.

There is every chance I'm wrong here, but it seems to me that the British in general don't lavish such praise and gush on their TV stars. And I'm not including the Crown here. Here we treat them as Gods almost and few deserve it.

The other thing that I see is that for every Buffy, Firefly, and Stargate: SG-1 (I'm a fan had to include it) there is any kind of crap you find on the CW and the like. People here are generally nothing more than followers. One show hits it big and there are five others ready to pop up with little thought...thus all the damn paranormal shows now.

I guess as always its down to our own personal tastes in TV programs. I personally enjoy Dr Who & Torchwood (or anything to do with aliens, time travel, space/dimension travel, etc etc) whilst I have no liking for big brother type programs or x factor.
